The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (Lionsgate, 2013)
In the second installment of The Hunger Games, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) becomes an icon of rebellion in the districts while attracting unwanted attention from President Snow (Donald Sutherland). Forced to embark on a victor’s tour with Peeta (Josh Hutcherson), Katniss fumes under the pressure of being a mouthpiece for the Capitol. As the next Games approaches, President Snow enlists a new gamemaker, played by Philip Seymour Hoffman. Plutarch (Hoffman) creates a special version of the Games for the Quarter Quell, happening every 25 years, featuring each of the previous victors in an all-star fight to the death. Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) are joined by new allies and stronger opponents in a fight that will not only test their combat skills but challenge them with a unique disaster every hour.
The third novel in The Hunger Games series will be broken into two films, Mockingjay Part 1 and Mockingjay Part 2, following in the footsteps of popular young adult series preceding it, Harry Potter and Twilight. Philip Seymour Hoffman had completed filming for the majority of the final two films before his passing, and will be digitally recreated for one remaining scene in Part 2—he will be greatly missed.
What started out as a successful series of young adult novels has transformed into a blockbuster movie franchise. Catching Fire received rave reviews from critics, garnering a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The film also broke box office records, becoming the highest-grossing movie of 2013. With spectacular visuals, a thought-provoking storyline and an all-star cast, The Hunger Games series captivate’s both young and old alike.
