The Lego Movie (Warner Bros. 2014)
Everything is awesome! Particularly in the new Lego Movie.
The movie is an elaborately constructed piece of animation that captures the realism of the toys so completely that at times you will find yourself thinking, wait, this is animated, right?
The hyper-realism of the Lego figurines began with microscopic examinations of the toys to capture the seams, lines, dirt, and grime that would be integrated into the digital textures. A modeling program was created that approximated the experience of snapping Legos together, one so intelligent that it would reject brick combinations that wouldn’t work in real life. An official “Lego Brick Library” was then referenced to simulate the connectivity of all the bricks. The result resembles meticulous stop-motion animation, but with the flawless execution of digital artistry.
Beyond the visuals, the voice cast, script and music round out an exceptionally witty movie. Featuring a star-studded cast of comedians including Will Farrell, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Banks and Will Arnett.
This movie gets a whopping 96% Rotten Tomatoes Rating, receiving nearly unanimously positive reviews.
