The Iron Giant (Warner Bros., 1999)

September 26, 2013

The Iron Giant (Warner Bros., 1999)It’s not often that animated films with substance come along and when they do, for some reason, they often get overlooked. This is the case for The Iron Giant, a charming movie with a strong message at its core, yet sadly not well known.

The Iron Giant tells the story of Hogarth, a young boy who discovers a 100-foot, metal-eating alien robot. At first, Hogarth thinks his only challenge is somehow hiding his huge robot friend from his mother. However, set in 1957 against the canvas of the Cold War, government agents soon set out to destroy the robot in the fear that he will be used as a weapon.

After reading some comic books and learning about the state of our world, the robot too becomes worried about what he could be. Hogarth sums up the core message of the film when he tells his friend, “you are what you choose.”

This film definitely earns its 97% Rotten Tomatoes rating. Despite failing at the box office, it was universally hailed by critics and won many awards including the Annie Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Animated Theatrical Feature.

This is a fantastic film for both adults and children alike. Download The Iron Giant today!
