New Release: Pacific Rim (Warner Bros., 2013)
Directed by Guillermo del Toro, Pacific Rim focuses on beautiful and sophisticated visuals in an homage to the Japanese monster films of the 1950s and ‘60s. In an interview with the LA Times, del Toro stated, “I really wanted to make a movie that had an incredibly airy and light feel. This is not a super-brooding, super-dark, cynical summer movie. I wanted very much to do a movie that is aiming for a young audience. Adults can be, God willing, entertained by the big, beautiful, sophisticated visuals and the action and all that, but my real hope is that this movie allows for a new generation of kaiju and robot kids that fall in love with giant monsters.”
Del Toro’s appreciation for this genre shines through in Pacific Rim. Set in 2025, the world is retreating behind walls to protect itself from a seemingly unstoppable army of colossal beasts. In a final effort to defeat them, two pilots set out in a humanoid war machine to destroy the source of the army.
