Handling Disk Cartridges

Disc cartridges are easily damaged and must always be handled with care. Using basic handling procedures, and taking the proper precautions, can prevent damage to drives and protect content.

The first thing to remember is that disc cartridges are sensitive mechanical devices that can be damaged by even a slight impact.

When holding a disc cartridge, avoid touching the exposed connector at the back. Static electricity can damage electronics inside. Anytime the disc cartridges are removed from a server; the disc cartridge should be placed flat on a well-padded, anti-static, surface. Never stack disc cartridges.

The 1-U server ships with disc cartridges that you must install in the server. After unpacking each disc cartridge, verify that the latch (the gray plastic wedge that extends from the top of the disc cartridge) works properly. The latch is designed to retract when you press the Kaleidescape logo and to pop up and engage with the chassis when the disc cartridge is inserted. If the latch sticks in the retracted position, the disc cartridge doesn’t lock in place.

Insert each disc cartridge into an open slot. The logo goes to the left, and the status lights go to the right. Firmly, but gently, push the cartridge in until it clicks into place. Replace the front panel.

The 3-U server ships with the disc cartridges already installed. With all 14 cartridges installed the 3-U server is quite heavy. Kaleidescape recommends removing the disc cartridges, installing the server, and then reinserting the disc cartridges.

To remove a disc cartridge, push in the Kaleidescape logo to release the disc cartridge and slide it out. Reinsert the disc cartridge with the logo at the top and the status lights at the bottom. Firmly, but gently, push the cartridge in until it clicks back into place.

The 5-U server ships with disk cartridges already installed. With all 12 disc cartridges installed, the 5-U server is quite heavy. Kaleidescape recommends removing the disc cartridges, installing the server, then reinserting the disc cartridges.

To remove a disc cartridge, pull down the handle and slide the disc cartridge out. Reinsert the disc cartridge with a status light at the top, pull the handle down, then slide the cartridge in as far as possible, just until the handle starts to close. Close the handle and push on the disc cartridge above the status light until the cartridge is firmly seated.

If the handle is closed before inserting the disc cartridge, the cartridge cannot be seated properly and damage can result. Verify that the disc cartridges are evenly aligned before closing the front panel.
