Designing the Ultimate Home Cinema

Australian designer David Moseley discusses the architectural, aesthetic, and acoustic elements that go into his award-winning immersive home cinemas.
By David Moseley, Wavetrain Cinemas
Cinema design, for me, has always lived at the intersection of emotion and engineering. That intersection is also where content integrity matters most; respecting the filmmaker’s intent and ensuring the experience at home reflects what was mastered in the studio. While the end goal is undeniably emotional — immersion, excitement, presence — the pathway to achieving that is deeply technical. I’ve spent the better part of two decades obsessing over the science that underpins great cinema, particularly acoustics. In fact, here in Australia I’m often affectionately referred to as “the acoustic nutter.” I take that as a compliment.
My approach to cinema design is driven by one belief: if the fundamentals aren’t engineered correctly, no amount of luxury finishes, or high-end equipment can save the experience.
The other side of the emotional connection to the cinema is aesthetics. The cinema can be a simple black box or an interior masterpiece. My background before entering the CI market 30 years ago was high-end residential architecture. By the time I left architecture, I had already been published half a dozen times for interior design & architecture generally. Although my entry into home cinema was accidental, blending the two skills led me to create Wavetrain Cinemas.
This fusion of both engineering excellence and holistic design, is what sets me apart from most of the industry. Wavetrain Cinemas is responsible for engineering the sound isolation systems, HAVC design, acoustic engineering, audio & video calibration, interior design, etc. All architectural drawing work is produced in-house and we build the complete cinemas from the plasterboard shell onwards (we do not let other trades inside the shell of the cinema, so we can maintain quality control).
It’s this dedication to the client outcomes, which has made us the most awarded company in the Asia Pacific region of CEDIA and the only company to have won ‘Best Global Cinema’ twice.

Vision First — But Engineered From Day One

Every cinema begins with a conversation about how a client wants to feel when they watch a film. But unlike many design processes, those emotional goals are immediately translated into measurable performance criteria.
From the very first sketch, I’m thinking about:
  • Target reverb times and decay characteristics
  • Low-frequency behavior and modal distribution
  • Speaker placement geometry and coverage
  • Sightlines, screen size, and viewing angles based on SMPTE and CEDIA standards
  • Interior design, seating types, material palette, etc.
  • Audio/Video technologies & solutions to meet the client’s need
This technical framework allows creativity to flourish without compromise. Emotion sets the direction — engineering ensures we actually arrive there.

Space as an Acoustic Instrument

With a background in high-end residential architecture, I see rooms not as empty containers but as instruments to be tuned. Dimensions, ratios, and materials all influence how sound behaves long before a single speaker is installed. If something isn’t working, we will redesign the house – a reason why we prefer to be engaged in the design phase of the project.
At Wavetrain Cinemas, we design the room itself as part of the sound system. Walls are mass-loaded and damped, ceilings are shaped for diffusion and control, and surfaces are selected not just for aesthetics but for their acoustic contribution.
This is where my passion for acoustics truly lives. I lecture globally on acoustics, sound isolation, and cinema design, and I’m a certified ISF and Professional Video Alliance calibrator, as well as a CEDIA RP22 instructor for the Asia Pacific region. Teaching reinforces what I believe deeply: great cinemas are built on physics, not guesswork.

Presence Is Measurable

People often talk about “immersion” as if it’s subjective. It isn’t. Presence can be designed, predicted, and verified. When paired with pristine, bit-for-bit playback from a source like Kaleidescape, that presence isn’t compromised by compression, streaming artefacts, or inconsistent mastering.
For us, presence is achieved through:
  • Precisely controlled reverb times tailored to room volume
  • Seamless integration between subwoofers and main channels
  • Reference-level calibration of audio and video systems
  • System headroom, so everything is playing within itself
  • Consistency across seats, not just a single ‘sweet spot’
Because Wavetrain handles acoustics, speaker design, amplification, and calibration in-house, we can control the entire signal chain — from the physics of the room to the final pixel and waveform. When that chain is fed by reference-quality content from Kaleidescape, the result is a cinema that faithfully reproduces the creative and technical intent of the filmmakers and sound designers. This is critical to achieving repeatable, reference-grade results.

Elementi — Engineering the Sound We Always Wanted

Elementi was born from a simple frustration: commercially available speakers rarely behaved the way we needed them to in properly engineered cinemas. So we designed our own using a keep it simple premise, where signal integrity is the primary goal.
Inspired by the four natural elements — Earth, Water, Air, and Fire — Elementi speakers and amplifiers are designed to deliver:
  • Earth: deep, controlled, effortless low-frequency energy
  • Water: fluid, natural midrange articulation
  • Air: clarity, openness, and spatial precision
  • Fire: dynamic impact without harshness or fatigue
These systems are engineered to perform at reference level, yet remain emotionally engaging at any volume — a non-negotiable requirement for real-world home cinemas. Amplifiers are located close to the speakers (not in them), in serviceable locations, where speaker cables runs can be kept short.
This control of the speaker is critical to our philosophy that home cinemas should only be EQ up to the transition point. It can only be achieved through controlling the sound signature of the room and using incredibly accurate active speaker systems.

Trust, Collaboration, and the Freedom to Surprise

One of the greatest privileges in my career has been the trust our clients place in us. Over time, many have chosen not to dictate outcomes, but instead say two simple words: “Surprise me.”
The Utopian Dream cinema was one of the first projects where a client gave us complete creative freedom. That trust resulted in a space that exceeded expectations — and reshaped how many future clients chose to engage with us.

When clients hand over that level of trust, our responsibility increases. Every design decision must be justified, every performance metric achieved, and every creative choice aligned with the promise of a truly exceptional cinematic experience.

Why I Continue to Design Cinemas

What continues to inspire me isn’t technology alone — it’s the reaction when engineering disappears and storytelling takes over. When a room falls silent in anticipation, when sound envelopes without effort, and when image and audio work together seamlessly, the result is something timeless.
Cinema, at its best, is shared emotion powered by science — and by content delivered exactly as it was mastered. When engineering, environment, and uncompromised playback align, the result is an experience that transcends technology and becomes pure storytelling. Designing spaces that honor both is not just my profession — it’s my obsession.
