1U (KSERVER-1500) Server Power Supply Replacement
Background
Please refer to Troubleshooting Power Issues for help with a 1U (KSERVER-1500)
server that does not power up properly. If the issue is due to a failed power supply, contact your local Kaleidescape dealer for service kit availability. The following procedure details how to install a 1U (KSERVER-1500)
power supply replacement (SVC-KIT-0020).
Preparation
Before you begin, you will need:
Service Kit Parts
Tools Required
- Philips screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- Utility knife
- Clean, dry cloth
- Vacuum with small, soft dusting attachment
- Canned air (multi-purpose duster safe for electronic circuitry)
- Electrostatic discharge (ESD) wristband or other ESD protection
Procedure
Power off Server and Remove Disk Cartridges
1. Press the POWER button to turn off the server.

2. WAIT ten seconds. The drives must have time to spin down and park.
3. Disconnect all cables including power cord.

4. Pull gently on both sides of the front panel and remove.

5. Press the eject buttons on the disk cartridges.

6. Gently slide each disk cartridge out of the slot.
WARNING Avoid touching the exposed connector at the back of the disk cartridge. Static electricity can damage the electronics inside the disk cartridge.
NOTE: Be careful to minimize contact between the disk cartridge and the chassis.
7. Place the disk cartridges on a well-padded, anti-static surface. Do NOT stack disk cartridges.
WARNING Disk cartridges can be damaged by even a slight bump. Extreme care must be taken at all times when handling the disk cartridges, especially when inserting, removing, placing on a surface, or when cleaning. Failure to observe precautions can result in damage to the drive and loss of content.
8. Remove unit from rack (if required).
9. Remove rack ears from chassis.

10. Cut through the warranty sticker, usually applied to the side of the unit, with a knife.

11. Remove two screws from each side of the chassis and set aside.

12. Remove the seven screws on the top of the chassis lid.

13. Slide the lid toward the front of the chassis and lift to remove.

Clean the Disk Cartridge and Chassis
1. Wipe the inside of the chassis lid clean.
2. Wipe the outsides of the disk cartridges. Avoid touching the rear connectors.
3. Vacuum the grill on top of the drive cage.

4. Vacuum the inside of the drive cage with small, soft dusting brush attachment.

WARNING Be careful to avoid touching the connectors inside the drive cage.
5. Vacuum the front panel, front and back. Be sure to clean the front grill.

6. Use canned air to blow air through each fan from behind.

7. Use canned air to clean the circuit board. Hold the can at least 6 in. from the board and blow air out the chassis rear vents.

8. Blow canned air across power supply, blow air out the rear vents

Remove Power Supply
1. Attach ESD wristband or provide other ESD protection while performing these procedures.

2. Cut the cable tie that binds the four-wire power supply cable that runs directly to the main board.

3. Release the locking mechanism and disconnect connector from the power supply to the main board.

4. Release the locking mechanisms and remove the 2×12 power connector from the power supply to the power controller board. If needed, use a flat head screwdriver to remove this connector.

4. Release the locking mechanisms and remove the 2×12 power connector from the power supply to the power controller board. If needed, use a flat head screwdriver to remove this connector.

6. Remove the four screws attaching the power supply to the chassis.

NOTE: Some power supplies are mounted front to back, some side to side.
7. Lift out power supply.
Replace the Power Supply
1. Install the new power supply. Align the holes on the power supply with the chassis mount.
NOTE: Be careful not to damage the SATA cable running from the backplane to the SATA controller
2. Replace screws, screw onto the chassis finger tight.

3. Connect the 2×12 connector from the power supply to the power controller board.

4. Connect the connector from the power supply to the main board.

5. Connect the two-wire power connector (to the AC inlet) under the rubber shield.

6. Bundle the cable from the power supply to the main board and the USB cable from the power controller board to the main board with the new cable tie. Be sure the cable tie runs through the small metal loop on the bottom of the chassis.

7. Verify that all connectors are completely locked in place and secure.
8. Cut off excess length of cable tie.
Reattach Chassis Lid and Reinstall Disk Cartridges
1. Align the chassis lid. Slide the lid back and into place.
2. Replace screws on the top and sides.
3. Connect the power cord and front panel without installing disk cartridges.

4. Power on the server to verify that the power supply lights the front panel. Then DISCONNECT the power cord and remove front panel.
5. Replace rack ears. See figure 6.
6. Reinstall in rack if necessary.
7. Verify that the latch on the disk cartridge, the gray plastic wedge that extends from the top of the cartridge, works properly. The latch is designed to retract when the Kaleidescape logo (or white button on a blank) is pressed, and to pop up and engage with the chassis when a disk cartridge is inserted. If the latch sticks in the retracted position the disk cartridge does not lock in place and cannot operate properly.
8. Reinstall disk cartridges. Align the disk cartridge to the slot correctly. The latch goes to the left with status lights to the right.
9. Push firmly but gently in the middle of the cartridge until the cartridge clicks into place. Do NOT slam the cartridge in.

10. Replace front panel and reconnect power cord and network cable. See figures 2 and 3.
