The Movie Store automatically determines which download qualities to select based on the capabilities of the players and displays in your system. The new Download Preferences interface lets you customize this behavior by choosing a preferred quality for each playback zone.
For example, if a Strato C is connected to a projector that supports 4K HDR10 but looks better with 4K SDR, you can set that zone to Prefer SDR. You can also mark a player as Not in Use so it is excluded when the Movie Store determines which qualities to download.
Download Preferences are available in two places:
To manage your download preferences on the Kaleidescape Movie Store, log in to your account and select My Systems from the Manage menu.
On the My Systems page, each system activated on your account now has a Download Preferences tab.
Select Download Preferences to view the settings for each playback zone. By default, all zones are set to Highest Quality.
You can choose one of the following settings for each zone:
When different zones require different qualities, the Movie Store automatically selects all the required qualities without downloading duplicates.
The At a Glance section shows which movie versions the Movie Store will automatically select based on your current preferences.
As you change your preferences, At a Glance updates in real time so you can immediately see which qualities will be downloaded.
In the example above, the system would automatically select:
A zone that is paired with another player through Co-Star is shown as unavailable because its download preferences do not apply independently.
For Co-Starred systems, you can choose which system receives HD and SD downloads. This option appears only when your system is paired.
Changing the download target to the Encore system, for example, disables the download preferences for the Premiere system because HD and SD downloads will no longer be sent there. The At a Glance section also updates to reflect the change.
The Include extras checkbox controls whether bonus content—such as deleted scenes, interviews, and other extras—is downloaded along with the movie.
Enabling Include extras may cause additional quality versions to be selected when they are needed to download the extras.
If all playback zones are set to Not in Use, the Include extras option is disabled.
The examples above show how changing preferences affects the versions selected for download:
And in the example below, a Strato V zone to Prefer SDR causes the Movie Store to select 4K SDR instead of 4K Dolby Vision, when both are available.
Download Preferences determine the default selections, but you can still override them whenever you purchase a movie or queue a previously purchased movie for download.
When you open the download quality selector by clicking (change), you can manually select different qualities, just as you could before.
For example, based on the preferences configured above, the Movie Store might automatically select 4K Cinematic HDR10 for the main system and 4K SDR for a Strato V in standalone mode. If Include extras is disabled, neither system will download extras. You can still select Change to choose different qualities or enable extras for that particular download.
In the Kaleidescape mobile app, Download Preferences are available from the Downloads page in the More tab.
If you have multiple systems, first select the system you want to configure. Then tap the gear icon to open its Download Preferences.
The mobile app provides the same Download Preferences and At a Glance information available in the web store. Changes you make in the mobile app are synchronized with the Movie Store immediately. Likewise, any changes made in the web store take effect in the mobile app.
Download Preferences determine the default qualities selected for a purchase or download, but you can override those selections for an individual movie.
When purchasing a movie or downloading a previously purchased movie, the app shows the qualities that will be downloaded. Tap Change to select different qualities or to change whether extras are included.
The app also indicates whether extras will be included with the download, giving you the option to add or omit them before completing the purchase or download.
Note: Download Preferences are currently available only in version 2.2 or later of the Kaleidescape iOS app. Support for these settings in the Android app is under development and is expected to be available later this year.
