Strato K is the world’s highest-fidelity movie player. Strato K introduces our exclusive new 4K Cinematic™ format and unlocks native 8K playback. Taking advantage of its 8K processing power, 4K Cinematic features full chroma sampling (up to 4:4:4) and much higher bitrates. 4K Cinematic movies include more image data for richer color, cleaner detail, and a more natural look.
Like all Kaleidescape movie players, Strato K supports lossless multi-channel and spatial object-based audio, including Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. Strato K works on its own or as part of a larger Kaleidescape system.
Strato K renders the onscreen display (OSD) graphics in full 4K.
When connected to an 8K display, the OSD will be rendered at 4K and upscaled to 8K.
All Strato players support lossless bitstream audio. Strato K supports lossless decoding of audio.
Strato K has onboard solid-state storage to hold approximately 7 4K Cinematic titles. Movies download in about 10 minutes over a gigabit network, even while watching previously downloaded movies.
When in standalone mode, Strato K:
Storage and playback zones can be expanded by grouping it with a Terra movie server. This will change Strato K from standalone to grouped mode.
When Strato K is grouped with a system that includes a Terra or Terra Prime movie server, it automatically switches to grouped mode. In this mode, all movies in onboard storage are deleted and storage is disabled. These movies will need to be redownloaded to the Terra server. Strato K will then view and play movies stored on the servers in the system.
To return Strato K to standalone mode, with the power on, initiate a factory reset by pressing and holding the pinhole reset button on the Strato K back panel for 5 seconds until the front panel LEDs begin blinking. The Strato K will reboot and switch to standalone mode. When reactivated in standalone mode, the onboard storage will be empty.
Strato K has a solid-state drive large enough to store approximately 7 4K Cinematic titles. Note that this storage is available only when Strato K is operating in standalone mode.
Strato K in standalone mode will automatically mark previously downloaded movies that have been in the “Played” collection for at least 48 hours as candidates for deletion. These titles will then be deleted automatically as needed to free enough storage space for new download(s).
Movies that have been in the “Played” collection the longest will be selected first. If you want to ensure that a particular movie is not marked as a candidate for automatic deletion, add it to the “Favorites” collection via the Collections flyout on the movie detail sheet on the onscreen display.
4K Cinematic is Kaleidescape’s exclusive new video format. 4K movies have been re-transcoded with ultra-high bitrates while preserving full chroma samplong (up to 4:4:4). The resulting movie files provide more color data, cleaner detail, and crisp motion during playback on Strato K movie players.
4K Cinematic movie files are on average 1.5x larger than standard Kaleidescape 4K movies, with bitrates averaging 110 Mbps. This makes Kaleidescape 4K Cinematic the highest fidelity 4K format available for the home, exceeding what’s possible on other platforms, including 4K Blu-ray disc.
Refer to the Kaleidescape 4K Cinematic & 8K Frequently Asked Questions support article for more information.
Yes. To take full advantage of Strato K’s 4K Cinematic playback capabilities, a 4K Cinematic version of the movie must be downloaded to the system. In almost all cases, at time of purchase, the Kaleidescape store will automatically detect your Strato K player and download the correct 4K Cinematic version.
Kaleidescape’s Strato K movie player can downscale 8K movies to 4K resolution with 4:4:4 color sampling, giving you higher color resolution compared to standard 4K movies distributed in 4:2:0 format. For movies where 8K is available, the 8K format played on a 4K TV will give you the same advantages as the new Kaleidescape 4K Cinematic format.
Refer to the Kaleidescape 4K Cinematic & 8K Frequently Asked Questions support article for more information.
The video quality filter in the store can be used to find movies in either 4K Cinematic or 8K.
No. 4K Cinematic can only be played on Strato K movie players.
Yes. Movies rented on the Kaleidescape movie store can be played by Strato K in either standalone mode or when grouped with a server. Rentals are automatically removed from onboard storage after their expiry.
No. Strato K can only play content that has been downloaded from the Kaleidescape movie store. It cannot play disc-based content of any format.
When full, Strato K automatically frees up space for new movie downloads by removing movies you’ve already watched as necessary. For movie lovers who want to keep their movies available on demand, you can add a movie server.
If you have played a movie on Strato K but do not want it to be automatically deleted, open the movie details page, scroll down to Collections, and add it to “Favorites.” Adding your movie to the “Favorites” collection will ensure it stays on your system until you remove it from “Favorites” or manually delete it from your player.
Yes. You can expand the storage capacity of your system by adding a Terra or Terra Prime movie server. However, when you do so, the Strato K player will switch to grouped mode, which disables its internal storage drive. Any content stored on that drive will need to be redownloaded to the Terra server.
Strato K players cannot be grouped directly with other Strato K players; they require a server to group. Without a server, the player operates in standalone mode as a separate, unique system.
There are no limitations on the number of Strato K players that can be grouped with a Terra movie server. However, it is recommended that the number of players in the system be limited to the servers’ maximum guaranteed concurrent playbacks as specified in the Kaleidescape System Server and Component Limits Knowledge Base article.
Kaleidescape does not distribute HDR10+ content. When connected to an HDR10+ capable display device, Strato K can play any downloaded HDR10 content. In addition, any downloaded Dolby Vision content will be converted to HDR10 for playback.
Strato K does not have a dedicated, audio-only HDMI port. If a separate audio port is needed, use the digital coax or optical audio port. Note, however, that the digital coax and optical audio ports are only active when Strato K’s audio output behavior is set to “PCM Stereo.”
The non-HDMI ports on Strato K are only active when the player’s audio output behavior is set to “PCM Stereo.”
Strato K can be grouped with a Terra movie server that has one or more Strato players grouped with it. When grouped in a system with other Strato players, only Strato K will be able to play downloaded 8K or 4K Cinematic content.
Yes. Refer to the Registering Discs for Disc-to-Digital Offers Using an External USB Blu-ray Drive Knowledge Base article for full instructions. DVDs and Blu-ray discs that have been cataloged will not appear on the Strato K’s onscreen display and will not be playable.
Strato K supports Co-Star pairing but only when grouped with a Terra or Terra Prime server. A Strato K in standalone mode does not support Co-Star pairing. However, when Co-Star is paired, Strato K’s 8K support is disabled as current Co-star compatible HDMI switches do not offer FRL support, which is required for 8K.
Strato K only supports system-level Co-Star pairing with Premiere M-Class players. Co-Star pairing with Alto players is not supported.
No. Strato K can only play content that has been downloaded from the Kaleidescape store. It cannot play disc-based content of any format.
Kaleidescape, at their discretion, may provide software updates periodically throughout the year that are automatically rolled out to products, including Strato K, which provide enhancements to user experience, new features, and bug fixes. There is no cost associated to customers to receive these updates, and no action is required.
Strato K does not directly support Wi-Fi networking. The only means of connecting Strato K to a network is via the rear panel Ethernet port. A hard-wired Ethernet connection with internet access is required to receive software updates and download content from the Kaleidescape movie store.
If a wired network is unavailable, consider a Wi-Fi bridge or a powerline/coax adapter when operating Strato K in standalone mode. Connecting Strato K to a Terra server via these means is not supported.
No. A physical remote is not included in the box but can be ordered if required. The Kaleidescape mobile app can be downloaded for free on your mobile phone or iPad and used as a remote control. See the Installation Guide for more information.
