Use of IR Repeaters

Overview

IR repeaters are recommended when IR-controlled devices, including Kaleidescape players and other source components, cannot be placed in direct line of sight of the display area. Common scenarios include installations in which equipment is located behind a TV or screen, inside a cabinet or closet, or in a separate room. IR repeaters are also useful when source devices must be positioned closer to a receiving device, such as a projector, to keep HDMI cable runs as short as possible while maintaining reliable IR control.

Simple Installations

For simple installations, like a single player placed behind a TV, a USB-powered IR repeater is typically sufficient. These devices generally include an IR receiver and an IR transmitter connected by a cable and powered through USB. Position the IR transmitter near the front of the player, and connect the USB plug to the back of the player or to a separate USB power source. Route the receiver cable so that the IR receiver is installed in a location with clear line of sight to the TV or screen.

Advanced Installations

For installations that require long cable runs and interfacing with many devices, such as a dedicated theater room with an IR receiver under the screen running back to an equipment closet, a more advanced IR repeater system is recommended. These systems typically include a central hub with a dedicated power adapter, multiple input ports for plug-in IR receivers, and multiple output ports to manage several devices. These units can use IR transmitters placed at the front of each unit or directly connect to equipment with IR repeater jacks (e.g. Kaleidescape flagship players) via direct-control cables with mini-phone connectors. Direct connect cables are very useful when multiple of the same model source device are in a single AV rack servicing multiple zones because they eliminate the chance of IR spraying into the wrong player.
