Overview

This document provides steps for:

  • Installing a Mini Terra Prime movie server.
  • Adding a Mini Terra Prime to a Strato system.
  • Creating a Strato system from a Mini Terra Prime server.

NOTE: This document contains installation instructions for the Mini Terra Prime movie server. For installation instructions specific to Terra and Terra Prime movie servers (including compact models), refer to the Terra Installation Guide.

Kaleidescape Mini Terra Prime

The Kaleidescape Mini Terra Prime movie server was designed to store movies without added compression or loss of quality. You can add Mini Terra Prime to any Strato system to store movies downloaded from the Kaleidescape store and make them available to every Strato and Alto player in the system. Terra makes it possible to configure a Strato system with many players.

A Mini Terra Prime server will not connect to or add storage to a Premiere system.

Mini Terra Prime contains two internal solid-state drives (SSD) that are not field replaceable.

The server will continue operating even after one of its SSDs fails. The movies that were stored on the failed drive are automatically restored from the Kaleidescape movie store.

Mini Terra Prime can deliver multiple movies at the same time over a standard residential network to Strato and Alto players anywhere in the home. Once a movie is downloaded and stored on the server, it can be enjoyed immediately from any of these players.

Features of Mini Terra Prime:

  • Storage for up to 125 4K Ultra HD movies, 216 HD quality movies, or 1200 SD quality movies.
  • Up to four Terra servers can be grouped to store larger collections.
NOTE: Kaleidescape recommends a maximum of four servers (of all types — Alto with storage, Strato with Storage, Terra, and Terra Prime) per system to ensure smooth and responsive system performance.
  • Provides computing services that enhance player performance.
  • Enables configurations with large numbers of viewing zones.
  • Up to 25 simultaneous playbacks of 4K Ultra HD movies.

Error Indication

Mini Terra Prime will illuminate its internal LED in amber under any of the following conditions:

  • Temperature — operating temperature is too hot or too cold.
  • Storage — one of the solid-state drives inside the server has a failure.
  • Network — a network error has occurred.
  • General — check the system’s Browser Interface for details.

When the internal LED is amber, check the server’s browser interface for details about the error condition.

Physical Installation

Planning the Installation

Ventilation and Clearance

Use the following guidelines when installing system components to ensure proper clearance and ventilation. These guidelines apply to all installations including rack mounting. (Rack-mount hardware sold separately.)

  1. Mount components in a location with adequate ventilation.
  2. Maintain a 2 in. (5 cm) clearance in the back, a 1 in. (2.5 cm) clearance in the front and on the sides, and a ¼ in. (0.65 cm) clearance above the server.

IMPORTANT: Mini units rely on passive cooling, so they must be installed in a well-ventilated area. Ensure the rack setup allows for adequate airflow and that the units are positioned away from heat-generating equipment.

Power Requirements

Kaleidescape component power supplies are universal input. They operate on any nominal line voltage between 100–240V, and frequency between 50—60Hz.

Kaleidescape recommends a grounded outlet with a high-quality surge protector for the power source for players and servers. A UPS is optional.

Network Requirements

A wired Gigabit Ethernet network connection is required; however Mini Terra Prime will perform optimally with a 2.5-gigabit Ethernet connection.

Installing Mini Terra Prime

Tabletop / Shelf Installation

  1. Choose a suitably ventilated location that is sturdy enough to support the 1.6 lb (0.75 kg) Mini Terra Prime.
  2. Place the mini unit onto the tabletop or shelf. Mini Terra Prime ships with feet attached.
  3. Installation is complete. You may now proceed to the Network Connection section below.

Rack Installation

Installing Mini Terra Prime in a rack requires a rack-mount kit (KMOUNT-MINI), sold separately. One or two mini units — including Mini Terra Prime, Strato E, and Strato M — can be installed in one rack unit of space. The rack-mount kit includes the parts necessary for single or dual installation.

Single Unit Installation
  1. Place the mini unit upside down on a soft, clean surface.
  2. Place the rack shelf centered over the unit. Align the two rack mount holes with the two mounting holes found between the front and rear feet. Install two of the provided screws to secure the unit to the shelf. Do not overtighten.
  3. Carefully flip the shelf and mini unit. Place the single-opening fascia in front of the unit and slide into position. Make sure the side tabs of the shelf and front panel reinforcements do not overlap as shown in the rear view below.
  4. Ready to install. This panel is not firmly attached until the shelf is installed in the rack.
  5. While firmly holding the fascia to the rack shelf, install the rack.
Dual Unit Installation
  1. Place two mini units upside down on a soft, clean surface.
  2. Place the rack shelf centered over the units. Align the rack mount holes with the two mounting holes found between the front and rear feet on each unit. Install two of the provided screws per unit to secure the mini units to the shelf. Do not overtighten.
  3. Carefully flip the shelf and mini units. Place the dual-opening fascia in front of the units and slide into position. Make sure the side tabs of the shelf and front panel reinforcements do not overlap as shown in the rear view below.
  4. Ready to install. This panel is not firmly attached until the shelf is installed in the rack.
  5. While firmly holding the fascia to the rack shelf, install the rack.

Wall Installation

Installing Mini Terra Prime on a wall requires a wall-mount kit (KMOUNT-WALLPLATE), sold separately. For detailed wall mounting instructions, refer to the Wall Mount Installation support article.

Network Connection

All Kaleidescape components must be connected to the same local network to be grouped into the same system.

  1. Ensure that any Kaleidescape Strato and/or Alto players that will be grouped with Terra are connected to a wired network and powered on.
Note: Components must use Ethernet to group with a Terra server. Wi-Fi is not supported when grouping with other components.
  2. Insert an unshielded Ethernet cable (Cat6 or better) into the network port on the back of the Mini Terra Prime server.
  3. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to a 2.5GBase-T or 1000Base-T (Gigabit) Ethernet switch or router.
2.5GBase-T is recommended. 1000Base-T is the minimum requirement.

Note:

  1. When Mini Terra Prime powers on, the left network port LED illuminates to indicate a valid network link. An amber LED denotes a 1000Base-T connection, and a green LED denotes a 2.5GBase-T connection. If the negotiated link speed is below 1000Base-T (e.g., 100 Mbps), the LED remains off. The right LED blinks to indicate network activity.
  2. Connect power. The Mini Terra Prime will automatically turn on. Initialization may take several minutes.
